Just want to mention the appropriate registry entry.
The value for the Group policy option that allows you to enable or disable the Show Desktop Icons feature of XP(e) is stored here:
[HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies\Explorer],"NoDesktop"=dword.
